The EYFS Curriculum
The EYFS Curriculum, which precedes the National Curriculum for Key Stages 1-4 (5 to 16 years), consists of seven areas of learning – three Prime and four Specific:
The Prime areas are fundamental, work together, and move through to support development in all other areas. They are:
Personal, Social and Emotional Development comprising of:
- Making relationships
- Self Confidence and self-awareness
- Managing feelings and behaviour
Communication and Language comprising of:
- Listening and attention
- Understanding
- Speaking
Physical Development comprising of:
- Moving and handling (gross and fine motor)
- Self Confidence and self-awareness
- Managing feelings and behaviour
The Specific areas include essential skills and knowledge for children to participate successfully in society. They are:
Mathematics comprising of:
- Numbers
- Shape, Space and Measures
Literacy comprising of:
- Reading
- Writing
Understanding the world comprising of:
- People and communities
- The world
- Technology
Expressive arts and design comprising of:
- Exploring and using media and materials
- Being imaginative
At Bankfields, our Early Years curriculum aims to establish the foundations that underpin all future learning, enabling our children to become confident, motivated and happy learners with high aspirations. We place language, communication and interaction at the heart of all our learning, laying the foundations for early reading, writing and mathematical skills and concepts.
We offer our children a rich and varied curriculum, providing first hand experiences and interactions within the world around them, that allows them to channel their creativity and develop a natural curiosity and a love of learning.
We aim to provide, a well-structured, secure, caring and well-resourced learning environment, both inside and out, offering a rich, engaging and challenging curriculum where children can learn, develop key skills, build resilience and reach their full potential.
We believe every child matters, encouraging and supporting them in building relationships and developing their personal, social and emotional wellbeing. Our children develop independence, critical thinking and individuality, whilst fostering respect and tolerance for others irrespective of ability, race, creed, gender or background.
We work in partnership with parents, encouraging and supporting them to take an active role in helping their child to develop and grow throughout their early years.
We aim to ensure that, as our children move into Year One, they have acquired the skills and positive attitude to learning to allow them to continue to flourish in KS1.
