PE

At Bankfields Primary School, Physical Education is a vital part of the curriculum, designed to promote high aspirations and equip pupils with the key knowledge, skills and mindset to thrive both physically and emotionally. Our PE curriculum has been planned carefully to ensure that the knowledge and skills our pupils need to be successful are developed in a progressive way and are revisited and built upon year on year.

We love to challenge our pupils and take great pride in watching them succeed, with many pupils excelling in sports such as table tennis. We even have some children who have become national champions!

Through teaching a broad range of activities, we foster resilience by encouraging children to embrace challenges, persevere, and learn from their experiences, while promoting wellbeing by highlighting the connection between physical health and mental health.

Communication and collaboration are central to our approach in PE, with team games and cooperative tasks helping students develop the ability to listen, share ideas, and work effectively with others.

Redcar and Eston School Sports Partnership (RESSP) play a key role in our teaching of PE and participation in a range of sporting events throughout the year. We embed their ‘Spirit of the Games’ values such a determination, passion, teamwork and respect into our lessons and when attending sporting events.

We believe in the value of offering range of after-school sports clubs and activities at Bankfields Primary School such as Table Tennis, football, tag rugby, basketball, dance, multi sports and circuit training as we understand the value of these opportunities for all pupils. We have been able to develop this provision further with the support of DfE funding (Opening School Facilities), creating even more opportunities for pupils to explore and develop their skills in a range of sports they may not have experienced otherwise such as yoga, Muay Thai and Urban Kaos Dance.

As a school, we believe in the value of parental support and engagement in their child’s learning and take regular opportunities to involve parents in a range of sports and PE sessions, Family Learning events and Sports Days which strengthens our community spirit. By embedding values such as determination, teamwork and ambition into every lesson, we empower children to achieve their best, fostering a lifelong love of physical activity and a strong sense of self-worth.

Through our PE curriculum, we also support children in being able to develop water safety as well as being able to swim 25 metres. Opportunities for swimming begin in Year 2 and continue into KS2.

PE is a key part of our curriculum at Bankfields Primary School as we truly believe in the importance of the subject in supporting not just the physical, but emotional wellbeing of our pupils. We believe that our PE curriculum and wider sporting opportunities support our pupils in becoming both healthier and happier, leading to them developing a lifelong love of physical activity, along with the knowledge and skills that they need to support them on the next stage of their educational journey.
